Dentistry and Literacy

Well its my second visit to the dentist in as many weeks, not bad after 10 years of avoiding them. This time I turned up an hour early after trouble with my phones calendar caused me to get timings wrong. Why are the calendars in Sony Ericsson phones so shite? Perhaps I’ll blog about that if I can recreate the problem. Back in the surgery they said I could take a seat in the waiting room and they’d fit me in when they had a gap. So I sat there until after my appointment time anyway. Readers Digest’s are as dull as they look. The dentistry passed without incident and apart from going to see the hygienist in a fortnight to have my gums cleaned up I’m clear for 6 months.

That little job out of the way I called in at the Post Office to pick up whatever they couldn’t fit in my letter box. It turns out to be the book I ordered surface mail from the US on 26th September. Thats 8 days ago (7 since delivery was attempted yesterday), I’ve had UK mail and airmail take longer! Its a signed US first edition of Neil Gaiman’s new book ‘Anansi Boys’. I’m tempted to buy Marie-Claire the audio book but that would be a little selfish as I’m just eager to hear Lenny Henry reading it :) .

edit: I forgot to mention the main reason I was blogging about the book turning up early. As hinted at in the previous blog entry I’d just started reading Magician. Since I’d chosen the surface mail option I thought I’d have plenty of time to get it finished before Anansi Boys turned up. I think I’m far enough into Magician and its a good enough read that I’ll finish it before turning to the new book. I had expected not to enjoy it but it is uite fun. It certainly hits on every fantasy novel cliche going but sometimes thats no bad thing. Especially when it’s well executed.
